22 Things I’ve Learned in 22 Years

On September 19th I turn 22 years old and like to think that I have learned something from my life this far. I got the idea to do this post by YouTube videos of the same title. So in no particular order here are 22 things I’ve learned in 22 years.

  1. Life isn’t fair. Cliché? Yes but its completely true that’s why its a cliché.
  2. Sometimes the best decisions you can make for yourself aren’t always easy but that doesn’t mean that its not worth it.
  3. You have to learn how to make yourself happy. Its not up to other people to always make you happy. If you like to read then read. If you like candles then burn candles.
  4. Education is VERY important. Now after high school its up to individuals to decide what to do with your life but having an education is almost a necessity. I’m not saying to spend thousands on collage or university but there are other options like online school and day courses. Also an education is something no one can take away from you.
  5. Sometimes you need to put yourself first. This is like #2 on this list but more wide of a statement because it could be taken in many different ways. We all have responsibilities that we have to be a priority, like taking care of children, but there is time when you can make time for yourself. After all self care is also very important.
  6. An ex is an EXample of someone you shouldn’t date again. Things didn’t work out in the first place. This is more directed to on again, off again relationships.
  7. People change. Sometimes not for the best. Also this takes a fair amount of time and not just a sudden change one day.
  8. Some friends are only ment to be your friend for a short time.
  9. Sometimes people deserve a second chance. As I have said above people do change but just because people change that doesn’t mean they deserve a second chance.
  10. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind but know that there is a right time and wrong time to. Just because you should speak your mind that doesn’t mean you need to be rude or disrespectful.
  11. “You don’t choose a life. You live one”. If you have seen the movie The Way then you will have heard this quote before. Personally I think this is a very important quote because everyday that you live is a gift and you should love your life, and not just go through the motions of life.
  12. Enjoy the small things in life.
  13. Social media only shows a small portion of a persons life.
  14. Take your health seriously and listen to your body.
  15. Get a hobby or multiple. Having something to do with your free time keeps you out of trouble.
  16. Learn self discipline. There are times in life when you need to choose between what you should do verses what you want to do. This is not an easy decision but sometimes you need to choose what is going to take you farther in life and make it better.
  17. Don’t create gossip. There is really no need for it and it can be very hurtful
  18. Know yourself. If you know who your are and what you believe in then no matter what anyone says about you it won’t matter because you know yourself and that’s what truly matters.
  19. Learn to listen. I have been working on this and since I have been actively aware to make sure that I’m listening to someone I have noticed how many people don’t actually listen to someone else. I constantly  notice people respond to me and other but cutoff the end of what we are saying and its really annoying. So the next time you interact with someone try to notice if you are thinking of what you are going to say next or are you actually listening to the person. It is fine to take a couple of seconds to think of what your going to say after the other person is done speaking. It also makes others feel like you care what they are say, makes you seem more intelligent, and you will actually hear what the other person is telling you (it could be very important after all).
  20. Learn to speak properly. There is nothing more annoying then when someone speaks in slang or colloquialisms. Plus there are times when its very important to know how to speak and express yourself. I’m not saying to speak like your are writing an essay but more so that everyone who speaks English will know what you are saying. For example I work at a liquor store and was told of an encounter my co-workers had one night. They had a couple of women in their twenties (we know because of IDing them) come in asking if we sold indies and something else that I can’t remember what she called it. My co-workers had no idea what she was talking about. It turns out that she was wondering if we sold single cans and two-six (750mL of liquor call a two-six because there are twenty-six ounces in the bottle) of some sort of hard liquor. Or the one that drives me crazy is when people call a twenty-four case if beer a two- four, which makes it sound like the person can’t count past ten.
  21. Be respectful to others. Now I know someone is going to say that respect is earned not given. Which I agree with completely but that doesn’t give you a reason to be, for lack of better words, a pompous Ass (sorry if your offered by the technical cuss).
  22. If you go to work then be ready to work. That’s why your there. If you don’t want to work then don’t go and call in so that someone who does actually want to work can. There is also nothing more annoying and frustrating then working with someone who doesn’t want to be there.
